Copper basics

Extracted from malachite and pyrites. Reddish, ductile, malleable and an excellent conductor.

Brass & Bronze

Brass = Cu + Zn (mp 880–930°C). Bronze = Cu + Sn (colour red→yellow, mp ~1005°C).

Lead + Bearings

Lead from galena; molten lead is silvery. Babbitt metal (Pb + Sn + Cu + Sb) is used for bearings.

Zinc, Tin, Aluminium

Zinc for galvanizing (mp 420°C). Tin from cassiterite (mp 231°C). Aluminium ore is bauxite; aircraft use mainly due to lightness.
